Since 1937, the U.S. has celebrated Columbus Day as part of our American story. But in 1977, Native American groups began to speak up about the parts of history that this story misses—specifically, the harm done to Native American communities.
Native American groups suggested replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day to recognize ALL of our history and avoid repeating past mistakes.
